Here is the order of events when rent due on the 1st goes unpaid. New Jersey's rule depends on a condition (or sets no fixed number of days), so we describe the steps rather than put a date on them.

What else to know in New Jersey
Notes from our review: Tenants can stop a nonpayment eviction by paying all rent due (Nolo: 3 days after a lockout/warrant posting). 'Habitual late payment' is a separate ground requiring a notice to cease and a one-month notice to quit. The senior grace period (§ 2A:42-6.1) was not read in statute text.
Cities and counties can add their own rules on top of the state’s. At “covered properties” under the federal CARES Act — generally those with a federally backed mortgage or federal subsidies — a 30-day notice to vacate for nonpayment is required in every state.
